History

The story of Stowe begins in the 1930s when the Civilian Conservation Corps first cut ski trails on Mount Mansfield. The resort’s legacy was cemented in 1940 with the installation of the world’s longest and highest single-chairlift at the time. This pioneering spirit defined Stowe for decades. The two separate ski areas, Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak, were finally connected in 2006 by the “OverEasy” gondola, creating the integrated resort we know today. In 2017, Stowe was acquired by Vail Resorts, bringing it into a new era of investment and access through the Epic Pass system.

Skiing and Snowboarding Activities
For advanced skiers, Stowe is synonymous with the “Front Four” – a set of legendary double-black diamond trails (Starr, Goat, National, and Liftline) that offer a steep, unforgiving challenge. Intermediates will find miles of beautiful, winding cruisers on both mountains, like the famous Perry Merrill. Beginners have dedicated learning areas with gentle slopes and slow-moving lifts. The resort’s terrain parks are designed for all skill levels, and the OverEasy gondola makes hopping between the diverse terrain of Spruce Peak and Mount Mansfield incredibly easy.

Non-Skiing Activities & Family Fun
Stowe is a true four-season destination with plenty to do off the slopes. The heart of the off-mountain action is the village at Spruce Peak. Here, you’ll find an outdoor ice rink, high-end retail shops, and even Stowe Rocks, an indoor climbing center. For a more relaxing afternoon, The Spa at The Lodge at Spruce Peak offers a world-class wellness experience. For a different kind of winter adventure, the resort’s Cross-Country Center boasts expertly groomed trails for classic and skate skiing, as well as snowshoeing.

Après-Ski & Restaurants
The food and drink scene at Stowe perfectly complements the skiing. For a vibrant après-ski experience, The WhistlePig Pavilion at the base of Spruce Peak offers craft cocktails a stone’s throw from the lifts. For a more casual, family-friendly meal, the Mansfield Den is a classic on-mountain spot. In the village, options range from the upscale Alpine Hall to casual cafes. The historic town of Stowe, just a short drive down the mountain road, expands the dining options even further.
