A Brief History

Solitude was founded in 1957 by a local Utah man, Robert M. Barrett, who saw the potential in Big Cottonwood Canyon’s epic snowfall. He started with just two chairlifts, aiming to create a ski area that prioritized the quality of skiing above all else. Over the decades, the resort has grown thoughtfully, adding modern lifts and expanding its terrain footprint. In 2015, Solitude was acquired by the operators of Deer Valley Resort, who invested in significant upgrades to lifts and village amenities while preserving the resort’s authentic character. Today, it’s a proud member of the Ikon Pass family, drawing in riders from around the globe.

Skiing and Snowboarding Activities
Solitude is famous for its varied terrain. Beginners can find their footing on the gentle slopes around the Moonbeam Express lift. Intermediates have a massive playground of long, cruising groomers accessible from the Eagle Express and Powderhorn II lifts.
For advanced and expert riders, Solitude is pure bliss. The resort’s crown jewel is Honeycomb Canyon, a vast bowl filled with steep chutes, glades, and powder fields that funnel down to the base. On a powder day, laps through Honeycomb are what Utah skiing is all about. Another favorite is the Headwall Forest, which offers incredible tree skiing. The resort is served by 9 lifts, including high-speed quads and the Apex Express, ensuring you spend more time skiing and less time queueing.

Non-Skiing Activities
The fun at Solitude isn’t limited to downhill runs. The Solitude Nordic Center boasts over 12 miles (20 km) of meticulously groomed trails for both classic cross-country skiing and skate skiing. It’s also the perfect place for a peaceful snowshoeing adventure through quiet aspen groves. Back in the village, you can enjoy a spin on the outdoor ice rink or simply relax and take in the alpine scenery.

Après-Ski & Restaurants
After a day on the slopes, the village offers several fantastic spots to refuel. The Thirsty Squirrel is the quintessential ski bar – a lively, casual spot for a cold beer, nachos, and sharing stories about your day’s best runs. For a more refined dining experience, Honeycomb Grill offers stunning mountain views and an inventive menu of American classics. If you’re staying at The Inn at Solitude, St. Bernard’s provides a cozy, European-inspired menu in a beautiful setting.

Solitude Resort Guide & FAQ

For the deepest powder and classic Utah winter conditions, January and February are prime months. For sunnier skies, warmer temperatures, and excellent spring skiing, plan your visit for March or early April.

Solitude’s ski season generally runs from mid-to-late November through mid-April, though these dates are always dependent on snowfall and weather conditions. Check the official resort website for the current season’s exact opening and closing dates.

Yes, the Powderhorn Adventure Center, located in the village, offers a full range of high-performance ski and snowboard rentals for all ages and ability levels. You can book your equipment online in advance for convenience.

Solitude is on the Ikon Pass. If you have an Ikon Pass, you can head directly to the lifts. Otherwise, single-day and multi-day lift tickets can be purchased online through the resort’s official website. Buying in advance is highly recommended as it often saves money and ensures availability, especially during peak periods.

During the winter (typically November 1 to May 1), Utah law requires all vehicles traveling in Big Cottonwood Canyon to have either 4WD/AWD or snow tires/chains. The road can be challenging in a storm, which is why booking a professional transport service with Rocks2Rocks is a reliable and safe alternative. Our drivers and vehicles are fully equipped for mountain conditions.

We strongly recommend booking your transfers to Solitude as soon as your flight and lodging are confirmed, especially if you are traveling during peak holiday weeks (Christmas, New Year’s, Presidents’ Day) or on weekends. This ensures the best availability and pricing.

We often have special pricing available for larger groups or for transportation to Solitude during off-peak times. Exact information is not available – please contact us for details and a personalized quote for your group.
