History

The resort’s skiing origins trace back to the local community’s passion for the sport on North Star Hill in the 1930s. It officially evolved and was later acquired by Resorts of the Canadian Rockies (RCR) in 1998, which led to significant upgrades, including the installation of the North Star Express high-speed quad chairlift. This development solidified its reputation as a premier destination, expanding access to its incredible terrain while maintaining its authentic, local vibe.

Overview

Kimberley boasts over 1,800 acres of skiable terrain, making it one of the largest in British Columbia. With a vertical drop of 2,465 feet and a summit elevation of 6,500 feet, the resort offers impressive runs and even more impressive views of the Purcell and Rocky Mountains. The terrain is evenly distributed, with about 20% beginner, 42% intermediate, and 38% advanced/expert runs, ensuring there’s something for every skill level. It’s particularly famous for its sunny conditions and consistent, dry “Kootenay powder.”

Skiing & Snowboarding Activities
The resort is a paradise for intermediate and advanced riders who love tree skiing. The Black Forest is legendary for its 500+ acres of pristine gladed terrain, offering endless lines through perfectly spaced ponderosa pines. For those who prefer groomed trails, the front side of the mountain features long, cruising blue runs like Main and Caper. The Easter Bowl on the backside provides a playground of open space and ungroomed powder after a fresh snowfall. The resort features 5 lifts, including the main high-speed quad, ensuring quick access to all corners of the mountain. A dedicated learning area and a top-notch ski school make it a great place for beginners to find their feet.

Non-Skiing Activities
The fun doesn’t stop when you unclip your skis. The Kimberley Nordic Club, located just a few minutes from the resort, offers 30 kilometers of impeccably groomed trails for classic and skate skiing, including a lit loop for night skiing. The area is also fantastic for snowshoeing and the increasingly popular sport of fat biking, with dedicated trails winding through the snowy forests. It’s the perfect way to spend a recovery day or for non-skiers to enjoy the winter landscape.

Après-Ski & Restaurants
The heart of Kimberley’s après-ski scene is the Stemwinder Bar & Grill at the base of the resort. With live music, a friendly crowd, and a classic pub menu, it’s the perfect place to recount the day’s adventures. For a unique on-mountain experience, ski to the Kootenay Haus, a rustic yurt at the top of the North Star Express, for a hot drink, a gourmet sausage, and panoramic views. The nearby town of Kimberley offers even more choices, from the Pedal & Tap’s famous “Mucked Up Fries” to the cozy atmosphere of The Old Bauernhaus Restaurant.

Kimberley Resort Guide & FAQ

For the best snow conditions, January and February are typically prime months, offering deep, dry powder. For sunnier skies and warmer spring skiing, March is fantastic. The resort is generally less crowded than other major Canadian destinations, so almost any time during the season offers a great experience.

Kimberley Alpine Resort usually opens in early to mid-December and runs through the first or second week of April, conditions permitting. Please check the official resort website for exact opening and closing dates for the current season.

The resort has a full-service rental shop located at the base area, offering a wide selection of modern skis, snowboards, boots, and helmets. It’s recommended to book your equipment online in advance, especially during peak periods like holidays and weekends.

Lift passes can be purchased online through the official Kimberley Alpine Resort website, which is often the most affordable option. You can also buy them at the ticket windows at the resort base. Consider an RCR Rockies Card if you plan to ski multiple days or visit other RCR resorts like Fernie or Kicking Horse.

Roads in the Canadian Rockies can be challenging in winter, with snow and ice being common. This is why booking a professional shuttle to Kimberley is a smart choice. Our drivers are experienced with mountain conditions and our vehicles are equipped for winter travel, providing a safe and hassle-free experience.

We recommend booking your transfers to Kimberley as soon as you have your flight and accommodation details confirmed. Our services, especially private vehicles, can book up quickly during peak season (Christmas, New Year’s, and Spring Break). Booking early ensures availability and the best price.
