History

Founded in 1958 by Preston Leete Smith, the resort began with just four lifts on what was then known as Sherburne Mountain. From these humble beginnings, it grew aggressively, adding new peaks and lift infrastructure throughout the 60s and 70s. A key development was the installation of one of the world’s most extensive snowmaking systems, which cemented Killington’s reputation for having the longest season in the East. This commitment to snow has allowed it to host multiple FIS Ski World Cup events, bringing international racing prestige to Vermont.

Overview & Terrain

The numbers speak for themselves. Killington features 1,509 skiable acres, a staggering 3,050-foot vertical drop (the largest in New England), and 155 trails spread across six peaks. An additional seventh peak, Pico Mountain, is also accessible via shuttle and is often included on lift tickets. The terrain is remarkably balanced: 28% is rated for beginners, 33% for intermediates, and 39% for advanced and expert skiers. Whether you’re cruising down gentle green runs from Ramshead Mountain or tackling the steep pitches of Bear Mountain, the variety is endless.

Skiing & Snowboarding Activities
The core of the Killington experience is, of course, the incredible skiing and snowboarding. The resort’s 21 lifts, including high-speed gondolas and express quads, efficiently move people across the vast landscape. For freestyle enthusiasts, Killington boasts several terrain parks, including the popular Woodward Mountain Park, which features a progression of parks with features for all skill levels. From the long, winding cruisers like Great Eastern to the challenging moguls on Outer Limits, every descent offers a new adventure.

Non-Skiing Activities
Your trip doesn’t have to be all about skiing. The resort offers a host of other winter activities. Take a thrilling ride on the Beast Mountain Coaster, a 4,800-foot alpine coaster that twists and turns through the woods. The Killington Tubing Park is a family favorite for some classic winter fun. For a more serene experience, explore the area on snowshoes or take a scenic gondola ride to the 4,241-foot summit of Killington Peak for breathtaking panoramic views of the Green Mountains.

Après-Ski & Restaurants
Killington’s vibrant après-ski scene is legendary. The Wobbly Barn, a local institution since 1963, is famous for its steakhouse and lively nightclub. For on-mountain dining with a view, nothing beats the Peak Lodge, offering sophisticated food at the summit. Preston’s, located in the Grand Resort Hotel, provides a more upscale, family-friendly dining experience. From casual pubs to fine dining, the access road is lined with options to refuel and celebrate a great day on the mountain.

Killington Resort Guide & FAQ

For peak conditions and the most terrain open, visit between January and early March. For smaller crowds, fantastic spring skiing, and lively events, late March and April are excellent. The resort is also famous for its early and late-season skiing, often opening in October and closing in May.

Killington proudly claims the “longest season in the East.” Thanks to its powerful snowmaking, the season typically runs from late October or early November through May. Always check the official resort website for the most current opening and closing dates.

You can rent skis, snowboards, boots, and helmets directly from several Killington Resort rental shops located at the main base areas (K-1, Ramshead, Snowshed). There are also numerous independent rental shops located along the Killington access road. Booking rentals online in advance is highly recommended, especially during holidays.

Lift tickets can be purchased online through the Killington website, which is the most affordable option. You can also buy them at the ticket windows at the resort. Killington is also a premier destination on the Ikon Pass, which provides access for a set number of days depending on your pass type.

Vermont’s mountain roads can be challenging in winter, with snow and ice being common. If you are not experienced or don’t have a vehicle with all-wheel drive and snow tires, booking a reliable transfer service is the safest and most stress-free option. Our professional drivers are experts in these conditions.

We recommend booking your shuttle to Killington as soon as your flight and lodging are confirmed, especially if you plan to travel during peak periods like Christmas, New Year’s, or President’s Day weekend. This ensures availability and gives you the best choice of vehicle.

We strive to offer affordable rates for all our services. For specific inquiries about group rates or potential midweek promotions, please contact us directly. Our team will be happy to provide a custom quote for your transportation to Killington.
