A Brief History

Marmot Basin officially opened for skiing in 1964 with a single T-bar and a day lodge. Since then, it has grown thoughtfully, always balancing expansion with the preservation of its pristine national park environment. Key developments include the addition of the Eagle Express high-speed quad in 2009 and the Paradise high-speed quad in 2011, which significantly improved access to its incredible high-alpine terrain. It remains proudly independent, focusing on the quality of its ski experience rather than large-scale commercialization.

Overview & Terrain

Marmot Basin boasts an impressive 3,000 feet of vertical drop and 1,720 acres of skiable terrain. The resort is known for its diverse runs, spread across four mountain faces. With a base elevation of 5,570 feet, Marmot Basin enjoys a long season with dry, reliable snow. The terrain is perfectly balanced for all abilities: 30% of the runs are marked for novices, 30% for intermediates, 20% for advanced skiers, and another 20% for experts who want to tackle challenging bowls and chutes.

Skiing & Snowboarding Activities
With 91 named runs and 7 lifts, there’s something here for everyone. Beginners can find their footing on long, gentle groomers, while intermediates have a massive playground of blue runs to explore. For the advanced, the upper mountain is where the real magic happens. Knob Basin, Eagle East, and Tres Hombres offer wide-open bowls, steep tree runs, and ungroomed powder fields that hold snow for days after a storm. The terrain parks provide features for freestylers looking to catch some air.

Non-Skiing Activities
Jasper’s appeal extends far beyond the slopes. As it’s located in a national park, the opportunities for winter exploration are endless. Try the Maligne Canyon Icewalk, where you can walk on the frozen floor of a deep limestone canyon. Other popular activities include guided wildlife tours (look for elk, bighorn sheep, and moose), snowshoeing through silent forests, cross-country skiing, and ice skating on Pyramid Lake.

Après-Ski & Restaurants
The town of Jasper offers a relaxed and genuine après-ski scene. You won’t find sprawling, loud nightclubs here. Instead, you’ll discover cozy pubs and friendly restaurants. The Jasper Brewing Co. is a local favorite for craft beer and hearty pub fare. For a more refined dining experience, consider Evil Dave’s Grill or Fiddle River Restaurant. On the mountain, the Caribou Chalet at the base and the Paradise Chalet mid-mountain are perfect spots to refuel with a hot chocolate or a burger.
