History

Opened in 1958 by ski pioneer Whip Jones, Aspen Highlands was conceived as a family-friendly, independent alternative to the glitz of Aspen Mountain. For decades, it remained a beloved local mountain, known for its challenging terrain and counter-culture vibe. It officially joined the Aspen Skiing Company in 1993, but it has fiercely maintained its unique, rugged character. Its most famous development was the opening of the Highland Bowl to guided tours in the late 1990s and later to full public access, cementing its status as a bucket-list destination for expert skiers.

Overview

Aspen Highlands is a mountain of impressive scale. It boasts a vertical drop of 3,635 feet and 1,040 skiable acres. The summit of the Highland Bowl reaches a lung-busting 12,392 feet. What truly sets it apart is its terrain profile: a staggering 65% is rated for experts, with the remaining terrain split between intermediate (23%) and advanced (12%). There is no beginner-rated terrain on this mountain, making it a pure playground for confident skiers and riders.

Skiing Activities
The experience here is all about gravity. With 122 trails and five lifts, the infrastructure is designed to get you to the goods. The lower and mid-mountain areas feature long, steep, sustained groomers and gladed runs. But the main event is the Highland Bowl. After a ride up the Loge Peak lift, a 45-to-75-minute hike along a scenic ridge gets you to the summit, where you can drop into pitches as steep as 45 degrees. It’s a rite of passage, offering some of the most exhilarating in-bounds big-mountain skiing in the country.

Non-Skiing Activities
While skiing is the main draw, the mountain offers unforgettable experiences off the skis. Uphill skiing is a popular morning activity for conditioned athletes. For a more relaxed pace, you can simply ride the Exhibition lift to enjoy the stunning mid-mountain views of the Maroon Bells. The real non-skiing action, however, is found in the vibrant town of Aspen just a few miles away.

Après-Ski & Restaurants
The après-ski scene at Highlands is legendary. The base area is home to the Highlands Alehouse, a perennial favorite for celebratory beers and food after a day of conquering the Bowl. The on-mountain standout is Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro, a tiny, European-style cabin famous for its gourmet lunches and notoriously wild, champagne-spraying après-ski parties. Reservations are essential and often book out months in advance. For a more casual bite on the mountain, the Merry-Go-Round offers classic ski lodge fare with incredible views.

Aspen Highlands Resort Guide & FAQ

The Aspen Highlands ski season generally runs from early December through mid-to-late April. For exact opening and closing dates for the current season, it’s best to check the official Aspen Snowmass website.

No. Access to the Highland Bowl is included with a valid Aspen Snowmass lift ticket. The only requirement is your own two feet for the hike up! Note that the Bowl has its own opening and closing times managed by ski patrol based on conditions.

Aspen Highlands has no green-rated (beginner) terrain. It is best suited for strong intermediate and advanced/expert skiers. If you are a beginner, the nearby Buttermilk mountain is an excellent, world-class learning area. Your Aspen Snowmass lift ticket is valid there, too.

Four Mountain Sports is the official rental operator for Aspen Snowmass, with locations at the base of Aspen Highlands and throughout the valley. Renting through them offers perks like free overnight storage and equipment transfers between the four mountains.

We recommend booking your transportation to Aspen Highlands as soon as you confirm your flights and accommodation, especially if traveling during peak periods like Christmas, New Year’s, Presidents’ Day weekend, or spring break. This ensures vehicle availability and the best possible rate.

Once you arrive via your Rocks2Rocks transfer, Aspen is incredibly easy to navigate without a car. The Roaring Fork Transportation Authority (RFTA) runs a free and efficient bus to Aspen Highlands and between all four Aspen Snowmass mountains and the town of Aspen, so you can easily ski a different mountain each day.

We often have special pricing available for larger groups or for travel during off-peak, midweek days. Please contact us directly with your travel details, and our booking team will be happy to create a custom, affordable quote for your group.
