History

The town of Steamboat Springs has long been a hub for winter sports, but modern lift-served skiing officially began on January 12, 1963, on what was then called Storm Mountain. Renamed Mount Werner to honor local Olympian Buddy Werner, the resort quickly gained fame for its exceptional snow quality. A local rancher coined the term “Champagne Powder®” to describe the light, fluffy snow, and the name stuck, becoming a registered trademark and a hallmark of the Steamboat experience. The resort has since grown into a world-renowned destination, committed to preserving its friendly, Western heritage.

Non-Skiing Activities
Your vacation doesn’t have to be limited to the slopes. Steamboat offers a fantastic array of winter activities for a day off or for non-skiers in your group. Take a scenic gondola ride for breathtaking views, go for a guided snowshoe tour through quiet aspen groves, or feel the thrill of the Outlaw Mountain Coaster. Other options include ice skating at the base area, exploring local trails on a fat bike, or simply relaxing at one of the on-mountain lodges.

For dining, options range from casual family-friendly spots like T&T Grill to fine dining with incredible views at Hazie’s. In town, you’ll find an even wider selection of restaurants, breweries, and saloons that capture Steamboat’s authentic Western charm.

Steamboat Resort Guide & FAQ

For the best snow conditions, January and February are prime months, when the famous Champagne Powder® is most abundant. March often brings sunny bluebird days and excellent spring skiing conditions. For fewer crowds, consider visiting in early December or April.

Steamboat’s winter season typically runs from the week of Thanksgiving in late November through mid-April. For exact opening and closing dates for the current season, please check the official Steamboat Resort website.

Equipment rentals are widely available. You can rent directly from Steamboat Resort at multiple locations at the base area for ultimate convenience, or from numerous independent ski shops located in the mountain village and downtown Steamboat Springs.

Steamboat is part of the Ikon Pass family, which offers multi-resort access. Single-day or multi-day lift tickets can also be purchased directly from the Steamboat Resort website. Booking online in advance is highly recommended as it often provides the best price.

The roads to and from Steamboat, particularly Highway 40 and Rabbit Ears Pass, can be challenging in winter. Snow, ice, and sudden closures are possible. This is why booking a reliable Steamboat shuttle with professional drivers and appropriate vehicles is the safest, most hassle-free experience.

We recommend booking your Steamboat transfers as soon as you have your flight and lodging details confirmed. During peak periods like holidays and school vacations, our vehicles book up quickly. Early booking ensures availability and the best choice of vehicle for your group.
