A Rich History

The story of skiing at Red Mountain begins with Olaus Jeldness, a Norwegian mining champion who organized the first-ever ski race in Canada on the slopes of the mountain in the late 1890s. This spirit of adventure and community grew, and in 1947, the Red Mountain Ski Club was officially formed, laying the foundation for the resort we know today. Unlike many modern resorts, Red’s growth has been organic, preserving its unpretentious vibe while expanding its terrain to become one of the largest in North America.

Resort Overview & Terrain

Red is big. Seriously big. With 3,850 acres of skiable terrain spread across four peaks – Red, Granite, Grey, and Kirkup – you could ski here for a week and never take the same line twice. The resort boasts a vertical drop of 2,919 feet and receives an average of 300 inches of that famously light BC powder each year. The terrain is remarkably diverse, with 119 marked runs and endless gladed areas. While it’s known for its challenging advanced and expert terrain (making up nearly half the mountain), there are plenty of stellar groomers for intermediates and a friendly, contained beginner area.

Skiing and Snowboarding Activities
The skiing experience is defined by freedom. From the summit of Granite Mountain, you have 360-degree access to wide-open alpine bowls, steep chutes, and perfectly spaced tree runs. The lift infrastructure, including 8 lifts, is designed to spread skiers out, which is why the mountain feels so empty even on a powder day. Beyond traditional skiing and snowboarding, Red offers in-bounds cat skiing for just $10 a ride, giving you access to fresh tracks on Grey Mountain.

Non-Skiing Activities
If you need a day off from the slopes, there’s still plenty to do. The area has an extensive network of cross-country ski and snowshoe trails that wind through the beautiful winter landscape. Fat biking is another popular way to explore the trails. For something more relaxing, The Josie Hotel at the base offers luxury spa services, or you can simply take a stroll through the charming, historic town of Rossland.

Après-Ski & Restaurants
Red’s après-ski scene is as authentic as its skiing. The legendary Rafters Lounge, located in the base lodge, is consistently voted one of North America’s best ski bars. With its soaring timber frame, live music, and energetic local crowd, it’s the perfect place to share stories after a big day. In Rossland, you’ll find great options like The Flying Steamshovel for pub fare and the Rossland Beer Company for locally brewed craft beer.
