A Polished History

Opened in 1972, Northstar was originally conceived as a year-round destination with a focus on family. Its identity was further cemented in 2010 when it was acquired by Vail Resorts, which invested heavily in transforming the base area into the bustling, sophisticated Village at Northstar and added high-speed lifts and the on-mountain Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe. This development elevated Northstar’s reputation for providing an upscale, service-oriented mountain escape.

Skiing and Snowboarding Activities
The skiing experience at Northstar is defined by long, rolling, and perfectly groomed runs that are ideal for intermediate cruisers. The “Backside” offers more challenging, sustained pitches for advanced skiers. For freestyle enthusiasts, Northstar is a paradise. It boasts several progressive terrain parks and a massive 22-foot Superpipe, all designed in partnership with Burton Snowboards. Every afternoon, the resort celebrates with “tōst,” a complimentary champagne or cider toast for skiers at the top of the mountain – a uniquely Northstar tradition. The comprehensive transport network of lifts ensures you spend more time skiing and less time waiting.

Beyond the Slopes: Non-Skiing Fun
The Village at Northstar is the heart of the action, featuring a 9,000-square-foot ice skating rink surrounded by fire pits perfect for making s’mores. Other non-skiing activities include cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at the Northstar Cross-Country, Telemark + Snowshoe Center, fat tire snow biking, and tubing. For those seeking relaxation, the village offers boutique shopping and world-class spa facilities.

Northstar Resort Guide & FAQ

The ski season at Northstar generally runs from late November through mid-April, depending on snowfall and weather conditions. Always check the official resort website for the most current opening and closing dates.

For the best snow conditions and base depth, February and early March are typically prime time. If you prefer smaller crowds and sunny, spring skiing conditions, late March and April can be fantastic. Holiday weeks like Christmas and Presidents’ Day are the busiest.

Equipment rentals are widely available directly in the Village at Northstar at several official resort shops. You can also find rental shops in the nearby town of Truckee. Booking your rentals online in advance is highly recommended to save time and secure your gear.

Northstar is a Vail Resorts property, so it’s on the Epic Pass. If you plan to ski multiple days or at other Vail-owned resorts, an Epic Pass is often the best value. Daily lift tickets are also available for purchase, and prices are always lower when you buy them online in advance.

Mountain weather can change quickly, and roads like I-80 and CA-267 can have chain controls or closures. Our transportation to Northstar service uses vehicles equipped for winter driving and our professional drivers are experienced with snow conditions, offering a safe and reliable alternative to a rental car.

We recommend booking your shuttle to Northstar as soon as you have your flight and lodging details confirmed. Our services fill up quickly, especially for weekends and holiday periods. Booking early guarantees your spot and gives you the best choice of vehicle.

Yes! We can often provide custom pricing for larger groups requiring a private van or bus to Northstar. Please contact our booking office directly with your group’s size and travel dates, and we’ll be happy to provide you with a quote and discuss any available midweek or group discounts.
