History

The story of Mammoth begins with its founder, Dave McCoy, a hydrographer and passionate skier. He saw the incredible potential in this snow-drenched corner of the Sierra Nevada. With a permit from the U.S. Forest Service, he installed the first rope tow in 1941 and officially opened the resort in 1953 with the first chairlift. From those humble beginnings, McCoy’s vision grew into the sprawling, world-class destination it is today, known for its fierce independence and dedication to the mountain experience.
