A Brief History

Keystone was founded in 1970 by Max Dercum, a ski pioneer who envisioned a welcoming resort for families. Originally a small local ski area, it was acquired by Ralston Purina Company and began its transformation into a major destination. Over the decades, it expanded significantly, first with the addition of North Peak, known for its challenging mogul runs, and later The Outback, offering expert tree skiing and bowl access. This thoughtful expansion created a unique progression of terrain that caters to every skill level on a single lift ticket.

Resort Overview & Terrain

Keystone is massive. The resort boasts over 3,000 skiable acres spread across three main peaks – Dercum Mountain, North Peak, and The Outback – and five bowls.
– Base Elevation: 9,280 feet
– Summit Elevation: 12,408 feet
– Terrain: A balanced mix with approximately 12% beginner, 39% intermediate, and 49% advanced/expert runs. This makes it an ideal spot for mixed-ability groups.

Skiing & Snowboarding Activities
From long, gentle groomers on Dercum Mountain to the powder-filled chutes in Bergman Bowl, Keystone has it all. The resort features a modern and clean network of over 20 lifts, including high-speed gondolas, to move skiers efficiently. It’s famously home to the award-winning A51 Terrain Park, a massive park with features for all skill levels. And when the sun goes down, the fun doesn’t stop – Keystone offers extensive night skiing, a signature feature that sets it apart from other Colorado resorts.

Non-Skiing Activities
Your trip doesn’t have to be all about the downhill. Keystone offers a fantastic array of winter fun:
– Adventure Point Tubing Hill: A multi-lane tubing hill at the summit, accessible by gondola.
– Ice Skating: Enjoy two outdoor ice rinks at Dercum Square and Keystone Lake.
– Scenic Gondola Rides: Non-skiers can still ride the gondola to the summit for breathtaking panoramic views.
– Snowshoeing & Nordic Skiing: Explore miles of groomed trails at the Keystone Nordic Center.

Après-Ski & Restaurants
From casual pubs to fine dining, Keystone’s culinary scene has something for everyone. Kickapoo Tavern, located at the base of the mountain in River Run Village, is a classic spot for après-ski drinks and burgers. For a more elevated experience, take two gondolas up to the Alpenglow Stube on North Peak, one of North America’s highest AAA Four-Diamond restaurants.

Keystone Resort Guide & FAQ
When is the best time of year to visit Keystone?
The peak season runs from late December through March, offering the most reliable snow conditions. For fewer crowds and potential deals, consider visiting in early December or late March/early April.

Keystone Resort Guide & FAQ

Keystone’s season typically runs from early November to mid-April, though these dates are always dependent on snowfall and weather conditions.

Yes, unless you bring your own. Keystone Resort has multiple official rental shops in its villages, and several independent rental shops are located in the nearby town of Dillon. Renting in advance online often saves you money.

Keystone is part of the Vail Resorts portfolio, which means it operates on the Epic Pass system. You can purchase single-day or multi-day lift tickets, but if you plan to ski for more than a few days (or at other Vail-owned resorts), an Epic Pass product is usually the most economical choice.

Colorado’s mountain weather is unpredictable. For a stress-free arrival, booking a professional Keystone shuttle or private car is the safest bet. Our drivers are experienced with winter conditions and our vehicles are properly equipped, so you don’t have to worry about I-70 closures or chain laws.

We recommend booking your Keystone airport transfers as soon as your flights and lodging are confirmed, especially if you are traveling during peak holiday periods like Christmas, New Year’s, or Presidents’ Day week. Availability can become limited.

Our pricing is dynamic to offer the best possible value. Exact information is not available online – please contact us directly with your group size and travel dates, and our team will be happy to provide you with a detailed quote.
