A Brief History

The dream of a major ski resort in Jackson Hole began with Paul McCollister, a Californian who fell in love with the Tetons. In 1963, he founded the Jackson Hole Ski Corporation, and by 1966, the original 52-passenger Aerial Tram to the summit of Rendezvous Mountain was complete – an engineering marvel for its time. The resort quickly gained a reputation for its wild, untamed terrain. In 1992, the Kemmerer family purchased JHMR and invested heavily in its infrastructure, transforming it into the world-class, year-round destination it is today, while carefully preserving its adventurous spirit.

Resort Overview

JHMR is a giant. The resort boasts 2,500 acres of in-bounds skiable terrain, but that number expands to over 3,000 acres when you include the incredible backcountry access gates. The vertical drop is a staggering 4,139 feet, served by 13 lifts, including the iconic 100-passenger “Big Red” Aerial Tram.

• Base Elevation: 6,311 feet
• Summit Elevation: 10,450 feet
• Terrain: 50% Expert, 40% Intermediate, 10% Beginner

While famous for its expert runs, Jackson Hole has significantly expanded its intermediate and beginner areas, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

Skiing & Snowboarding
This is where Jackson Hole truly shines. For experts, landmarks like Corbet’s Couloir – a breathtaking drop-in couloir visible from the tram – are rites of passage. The Hobacks, Rendezvous Bowl, and the Crags offer endless acres of steep, off-piste powder fields. Intermediates will love the groomed cruisers off the Après Vous and Casper lifts. The Solitude Station, a mid-mountain learning center, provides a dedicated, unintimidating space for new skiers and families. The resort also features terrain parks for those looking to catch some air.

Non-Skiing Activities
The adventure doesn’t stop when you take your skis off. In Teton Village and the surrounding area, you can embark on a guided snowshoe tour into Grand Teton National Park, go cross-country skiing, or take a memorable horse-drawn sleigh ride through the National Elk Refuge. For a different kind of thrill, try the Cowboy Coaster at Snow King Mountain. If relaxation is more your speed, the village has several spas perfect for unwinding after a day on the mountain.

Après-Ski & Restaurants
From a casual beer to a fine dining experience, the food scene is a core part of the JHMR experience. The Mangy Moose Restaurant & Saloon is a legendary, can’t-miss spot for classic après-ski with live music and a rowdy, friendly atmosphere. For a more refined experience, ride the Bridger Gondola to Piste Mountain Bistro for incredible views and an elevated menu. In the village, Teton Thai is a local favorite, while The Handle Bar at the Four Seasons offers upscale comfort food and craft cocktails right at the base.

Jackson Hole Resort Guide & FAQ

The season generally runs from late November (around Thanksgiving) to early April. For the 2023/2024 season, the official dates were November 24th to April 14th. Always check the official JHMR website for the most current dates.

For the deepest powder and classic winter conditions, January and February are prime months. For sunnier skies, milder temperatures, and great spring skiing, plan your trip for March. Holiday weeks (Christmas, New Year’s, and Presidents’ Day) are the busiest.

There are multiple rental shops right in Teton Village, including JH Teton Village Sports and Hoback Sports. You can also find several rental shops in the town of Jackson, which are sometimes more affordable. Booking your rentals online in advance is highly recommended.

Yes, it’s strongly advised. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort limits daily ticket sales to manage crowds. Buying online in advance is the only way to guarantee you’ll be able to ski, especially on peak days. It often comes with a discount, too. The resort is also on the Ikon Pass.

Winter driving in the Tetons can be challenging. Roads are often snow-packed and icy, and Highway 22 between Jackson and Teton Village can see heavy traffic. Renting a 4×4 or AWD vehicle is a must if you drive yourself. Or, you can skip the stress entirely by booking a professional transportation Jackson Hole service like Rock2Rocks. Our drivers and vehicles are equipped for all winter conditions.

We recommend booking your shuttle Jackson Hole or private car service as soon as you book your flights and accommodation. Our availability, especially during peak holiday periods and weekends, fills up quickly. Booking early ensures you get the vehicle and time that best suits your schedule.

Yes! We often have special pricing available for larger groups and for transfers scheduled on weekdays (Monday–Thursday). For the most accurate and affordable quote for your group, please contact us directly with your travel details.
