A Brief History

While the town of Fernie has roots in coal mining, skiing has been a local passion for decades. The resort officially began as the Snow Valley Ski Development in 1962. It steadily grew, eventually being renamed Fernie Alpine Resort. A major turning point came in 1997 when it was acquired by Resorts of the Canadian Rockies (RCR), leading to significant investments in lifts and infrastructure that transformed it into the world-class destination it is today. Despite its growth, Fernie has fiercely protected its laid-back, community-focused character.

Resort Overview

The numbers speak for themselves. Fernie Alpine Resort boasts a massive 2,504 skiable acres of terrain. The vertical drop is an impressive 3,550 feet, providing leg-burning top-to-bottom runs. What truly sets Fernie apart are its five legendary alpine bowls: Siberia, Timber, Currie, Lizard, and Cedar. This vast, open terrain is a playground for intermediate to expert skiers, offering endless lines and powder stashes after a storm. With 142 named runs and 10 lifts, the resort effectively spreads out crowds and offers something for everyone.

Skiing and Snowboarding Activities
Fernie is a skier’s and snowboarder’s paradise. The resort is famous for the “Fernie Factor” – a weather phenomenon that brings an average of up to 37 feet of light, fluffy powder each season. Intermediates will love the long, cruising runs off the Timber Bowl Express Quad and the White Pass Quad. Experts can test their mettle with the steep chutes and tree runs in Currie Bowl or the challenging terrain off the Polar Peak chair, which takes you to the 7,000-foot summit. The resort also features a progressive terrain park for all skill levels.

Non-Skiing Activities
The fun doesn’t stop when you take your skis off. Fernie offers a fantastic array of winter activities. Explore the serene forest on the resort’s network of Nordic (cross-country) skiing trails or grab a pair of snowshoes for a peaceful winter hike. Fat biking has also become a popular way to see the snowy landscape. For families, the resort offers a kids’ activity center and outdoor skating.

Après-Ski & Restaurants
No ski day is complete without a proper après-ski session, and Fernie delivers. The Griz Bar, located at the base of the mountain, is an iconic and essential stop. Known for its lively atmosphere and classic pub fare, it’s the heart of the resort’s social scene. For a slopeside meal, Cirque Restaurant & Bar offers a more refined menu and stunning mountain views. The nearby town of Fernie, just a few miles away, expands your options with cozy pubs, family-friendly eateries, and excellent dining.

Fernie Resort Guide & FAQ

For the deepest powder, January and February are typically the prime months. If you prefer milder weather and sunny spring skiing conditions, March and early April are fantastic. The holiday season in December is magical but also one of the busiest times.

Fernie Alpine Resort usually opens in early December and runs through mid-April. These dates are always dependent on snow conditions, so be sure to check the official resort website for the most current information.

Yes, the Fernie Alpine Resort Rental Shop, located at the base area, offers a full range of modern ski and snowboard equipment for all ages and abilities. You can also find several excellent rental shops in the town of Fernie.

You can buy lift passes online in advance through the official Fernie Alpine Resort website, which is often the most affordable and convenient option. Passes are also available for purchase at the ticket windows at the resort base.

Winter road conditions in the Rockies can be challenging. Highways can experience heavy snowfall and require vehicles to have proper winter tires. This is why booking a professional Fernie shuttle or private transfer with experienced drivers is a safe and stress-free alternative.

We recommend booking your transportation as soon as you confirm your flight and accommodation details. Our services, especially private transfers, are in high demand during peak periods like holidays and weekends. Booking early guarantees availability.
