History

Founded in 1981 by Edgar Stern, Deer Valley was envisioned as a resort that would combine the beauty of the Wasatch Mountains with the service and amenities of a five-star hotel. This vision quickly set a new standard for the ski industry. The resort gained international fame when it hosted the freestyle moguls, aerials, and alpine slalom events of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Over the years, it has strategically expanded, adding terrain like Empire Canyon to offer an even richer ski experience.

Spanning 2,026 skiable acres across six distinct peaks, Deer Valley offers a vast and varied landscape. The resort boasts a 3,000-foot vertical drop, 103 ski runs, and a state-of-the-art lift system of 21 chairlifts designed to keep you on the snow, not in a line. The terrain is wonderfully balanced, with 27% dedicated to beginners, 41% to intermediates, and 32% to experts, ensuring every skier can find their perfect line.

Skiing Activities
The “Deer Valley Difference” is most apparent on the slopes. The resort is famous for its skiers-only policy, creating a unique and comfortable environment for those on two planks. Grooming is an art form here, with a massive fleet of snowcats working overnight to lay down perfect corduroy. For those seeking adventure, the glades of Empire Canyon and the steep chutes off Bald Mountain offer plenty of challenges. First-time skiers are catered to with world-class ski school programs and dedicated learning areas.

Non-Skiing Activities
The fun doesn’t stop when you unclip your boots. The area offers a host of winter activities, including guided snowshoeing tours through silent aspen groves, thrilling snowmobile adventures, and romantic horse-drawn sleigh rides. Many of the resort’s lodges feature luxurious spas perfect for a day of pampering and relaxation.

Après-Ski & Restaurants
Deer Valley’s culinary scene is as acclaimed as its skiing. For a sophisticated après-ski experience, the St. Regis Deer Valley’s terrace offers fireside cocktails with stunning mountain views. For a more unique meal, Fireside Dining at Empire Canyon Lodge serves a European-alps-inspired menu cooked over stone fireplaces. From casual cafés to award-winning fine dining, there are options for every palate and occasion.

Deer Valley Resort Guide & FAQ

The core season runs from mid-December through March, typically offering the most reliable snow conditions. January and February are prime months for powder, while March brings milder temperatures and sunny “bluebird” ski days.

Deer Valley’s season is conditions-dependent but usually opens in the first week of December and closes in the second or third week of April. For exact dates, always check the official resort website.

Yes, it is. Deer Valley is one of only three resorts in the United States that does not permit snowboarding. This policy creates a distinct on-mountain culture and experience.

The resort operates several Ski Rental locations at Snow Park Lodge, Silver Lake Village, and the Montage. You can also find numerous high-quality rental shops in Park City. We recommend reserving your gear in advance, especially during peak season.

It is highly recommended to purchase lift tickets online, well in advance. Deer Valley limits the number of daily tickets sold to prevent overcrowding. The Ikon Pass also provides access to the resort, but reservations may be required.

To ensure availability, especially during holidays and peak weekends (like the Sundance Film Festival), we recommend booking your transport as soon as you confirm your flights and lodging. Booking at least 2-4 weeks in advance is a good rule of thumb.

We often have special pricing for larger groups or for transfers scheduled during off-peak times. Please contact us directly with your travel details, and our booking specialists will provide you with a custom, affordable quote for your Deer Valley shuttle or private car needs.
