A Little History

Before it was a world-class ski destination, Crested Butte was a rugged coal mining town in the late 1800s. The ski area was founded much later, in 1960, on the slopes of Crested Butte Mountain. This unique history is preserved in the meticulously maintained historic town, which is a designated National Historic District. Unlike many purpose-built resorts, Crested Butte has a soul that feels both genuine and timeless, offering a glimpse into Colorado’s past while delivering a modern ski vacation.

Resort Overview

Crested Butte Mountain Resort boasts 1,547 skiable acres of terrain. The summit elevation reaches 12,162 feet, with a vertical drop of 2,775 feet (lift-served). The resort’s layout is naturally divided, with beginner terrain concentrated near the base area, long cruising runs for intermediates in the middle, and the famous expert terrain higher up the mountain. This natural segregation helps keep skier traffic flowing smoothly and safely.

– For Intermediates: Blue-square cruisers are plentiful. Trails off the Paradise Express and Silver Queen Express lifts provide long, scenic runs perfect for honing your skills.
– For Beginners: The base area has dedicated learning zones with gentle slopes and conveyor lifts, making it a comfortable and encouraging environment for first-timers. The resort’s ski and ride school is highly regarded.

Crested Butte Resort Guide & FAQ

For the deepest snowpack and access to the most terrain, January and February are typically prime months. March offers warmer temperatures and sunny “bluebird” days, making it ideal for spring skiing and enjoying the outdoor après-ski scene.

The ski season at Crested Butte Mountain Resort generally runs from late November (around Thanksgiving) through early April, depending on snow conditions. For exact dates, always check the official resort website.

Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport (GUC) is by far the closest and most convenient, only a 40-minute drive away. However, Montrose (MTJ) and Denver (DEN) often have more flight options and can be more affordable, making a pre-booked, reliable shuttle or private car service a fantastic option.

We highly recommend booking your Crested Butte transfers as soon as you have your flight and lodging details confirmed, especially if traveling during peak periods like holidays or spring break. This ensures vehicle availability and locks in your rate.

Mountain passes in Colorado can be challenging in winter and may require vehicles with 4WD, AWD, or snow tires. If you’re not experienced with or equipped for winter mountain driving, booking a professional transfer service is the safest and most stress-free way to travel. Our drivers are experts in these conditions.

We often have special pricing available for larger groups or for travel during off-peak days. Exact information is not available online – please contact us directly for a custom quote for your group’s transportation needs.

Equipment rentals are widely available at several shops in the base area of Crested Butte Mountain Resort and in the historic town of Crested Butte. Many offer online reservations for a quicker pickup process.
