History

Originally a gold rush base camp founded in 1859, Breckenridge has a vibrant and preserved history. You can still feel the Old West spirit along Main Street’s historic district. The Breckenridge Ski Area officially opened for skiing on December 16, 1961, initially on Peak 8. Over the decades, it has expanded dramatically, adding new peaks and landmark infrastructure like the BreckConnect Gondola, which connects the town to the base areas, and the Imperial Express SuperChair, North America’s highest chairlift.

Overview

Breckenridge Ski Resort is massive. It covers 2,908 skiable acres spread across five distinct peaks – Peak 6, Peak 7, Peak 8, Peak 9, and Peak 10. The resort’s base elevation sits at a lofty 9,600 feet, rising to a breathtaking summit elevation of 12,998 feet on Peak 8. This vertical rise provides an incredible variety of terrain across its 187 marked trails, served by a modern network of 34 lifts.

Skiing Activities
The five peaks each offer a unique personality. Peak 10 is known for its expert-only terrain with steep, challenging runs. Peak 9 is a paradise for beginners and intermediates, with wide-open, gentle slopes. Peak 8 is the heart of the resort, offering everything from groomed cruisers to high-alpine bowls accessible via the T-Bar and Imperial Express. Peak 7 features rolling intermediate terrain, while Peak 6 offers above-treeline bowl skiing for intermediate and advanced riders. For freestyle enthusiasts, the resort boasts world-class terrain parks, including the Freeway Terrain Park.

Non-Skiing Activities
Breckenridge offers plenty to do off the slopes. You can take a scenic ride on the BreckConnect Gondola for stunning views, go snowshoeing or cross-country skiing at the Nordic centers, or experience the thrill of the Gold Runner Coaster. The historic Main Street is an attraction in itself, lined with unique shops, galleries, and cafes. Guided historical tours and gold mine tours provide a fascinating look into the town’s past.

Après-Ski & Restaurants
The fun continues after the lifts close. A classic après-ski spot is the T-Bar at the base of Peak 8, where you can watch the last skiers descend. Sevens, at the base of Peak 7, offers a more refined but still lively atmosphere. Down in town, the options are endless. From the historic Gold Pan Saloon (one of the oldest bars west of the Mississippi) to casual breweries and upscale dining establishments, there’s an atmosphere and a menu for every taste and budget.

Breckenridge Resort Guide & FAQ
Plan your trip with these essential facts and tips.

Breckenridge Resort Guide & FAQ

For the most reliable snow conditions and full terrain access, visit between mid-January and early March. December offers a festive holiday atmosphere, while late March and April bring sunny spring skiing, warmer temperatures, and fun events.

Breckenridge boasts one of the longest ski seasons in Colorado. The resort typically opens in early to mid-November and runs through late April or even early May, conditions permitting. Please check the official Breckenridge Resort website for confirmed dates for the current season.

Breckenridge is on the Epic Pass. For the best prices, it is highly recommended to purchase your lift tickets or Epic Pass products online well in advance of your trip. Day-of window ticket prices are significantly higher. Visit the official resort website for all pass options.

Numerous rental shops are located at the base areas of Peak 8 and Peak 9, as well as throughout the town of Breckenridge. You can reserve skis, snowboards, boots, and helmets online in advance for a faster pickup process.

Winter driving on I-70 and mountain roads can be extremely hazardous due to snow, ice, and heavy traffic. Colorado has strict traction laws for vehicles. Opting for a professional Breckenridge bus or private transfer service like Rock2Rocks eliminates this stress, ensuring you travel in a properly equipped vehicle driven by an experienced professional.

We highly recommend booking your Breckenridge transfer as soon as you have your flight and lodging details confirmed. Our services, especially private transfers, fill up quickly during peak periods like holidays (Christmas, New Year’s, Presidents’ Day) and popular weekends.
