A Brief History

The resort was founded by NBC news anchor Chet Huntley, who opened the lifts for the first time in 1973. His vision was to create a world-class ski area that showcased the rugged beauty of his home state. After Huntley’s passing, the resort was acquired by Boyne Resorts in 1976, which has overseen its steady growth. The most significant expansion came in 2013 with the acquisition of the neighboring Moonlight Basin and Spanish Peaks resorts, uniting the entire mountain and creating the massive, interconnected ski area that exists today. This move solidified its tagline, “The Biggest Skiing in America®.”

Resort Overview & Terrain

The numbers speak for themselves. Big Sky boasts 5,850 acres of skiable terrain, a stunning 4,350-foot vertical drop, and over 300 named runs spread across four mountains. The summit of Lone Peak tops out at an impressive 11,166 feet, offering 360-degree views of three states and two national parks. The terrain is incredibly diverse:

Beginners (15%): Gentle, wide-open groomers are primarily found around the Madison Base area, perfect for learning.
Intermediates (25%): Miles of cruising blue runs flow from Andesite and Spirit Mountains.
Advanced (42%): A huge portion of the mountain is dedicated to advanced skiers, including steep bowls, glades, and challenging groomers.
Expert (18%): The legendary Lone Peak Tram provides access to some of the most extreme in-bounds terrain in the US, with steep chutes, exposed couloirs, and vast, rocky bowls.

On-Mountain Activities
Beyond traditional skiing and snowboarding, Big Sky offers plenty to do. The resort features multiple terrain parks with jumps, rails, and features for all skill levels. If you’re looking for a different kind of thrill, try the Adventure Zipline or a scenic winter lift ride. For a more peaceful day, explore miles of Nordic ski trails or book a guided snowshoe tour to immerse yourself in the quiet winter landscape. Dog sledding and romantic sleigh ride dinners are also popular ways to experience the magic of a Montana winter.

Après-Ski & Dining
When the lifts close, the fun continues. The Mountain Village and Madison Base are dotted with options. For classic après-ski, head to Scissorbills Saloon for live music and a casual vibe or Montana Jack for craft burgers and beers. For a more refined experience, Everett’s 8800 at the top of Andesite Mountain offers upscale dining with spectacular views (reservations highly recommended). Family-friendly options are plentiful, with pizza parlors and casual eateries available throughout the resort’s base areas.

Big Sky Resort Booking and Travel Tips
Do I need to rent ski equipment in advance?
While you can rent gear upon arrival, it’s highly recommended to reserve your skis, snowboard, and boots online in advance. You’ll often secure better pricing and guarantee availability, especially during peak weeks. Rentals are available right in the Mountain Village.
How do I purchase lift passes?
Lift passes should be purchased online through the Big Sky Resort website well before your trip. Prices are dynamic and increase as the date gets closer. Buying in advance is the best way to get a good price.

Big Sky Resort Guide & FAQ

The 51-mile drive from Bozeman Airport involves mountain roads that can be snowy and icy. Conditions can change quickly. If you are not experienced with winter driving or don’t have a 4WD/AWD vehicle with appropriate tires, booking a professional shuttle to Big Sky like Rocks2Rocks is the safest and most reliable choice.

We recommend booking your transportation to Big Sky as soon as you have your flight and lodging details confirmed. Our services, especially private transfers, fill up quickly during peak season (Christmas, New Year’s, and Presidents’ Week). Early booking ensures the best availability for your hassle-free experience.

We often have special pricing available for larger groups requiring a private van or for midweek travel during non-peak periods. Please contact us directly with your group size and travel dates, and we’ll provide you with a custom, affordable quote.
