A Quick History

The Aspen story began when the Aspen Skiing Company was founded in 1946, with Aspen Mountain opening that same year. What followed was a thoughtful expansion that created the powerhouse destination we know today. Buttermilk and Aspen Highlands both opened in 1958 (with Highlands officially joining the company in 1993), and the massive Snowmass mountain was developed and opened in 1967. This legacy created a unique blend of historic ski town charm and modern, world-class resort infrastructure.

Resort Overview

Combined, the four mountains of Aspen Snowmass boast over 5,600 acres of skiable terrain, served by 42 lifts and featuring more than 360 trails.
– Snowmass: The largest of the four, with 3,342 acres and a massive 4,406-foot vertical drop. It’s known for its wide-open groomers, family-friendly areas, and extensive intermediate terrain. Its longest run, “Long Shot,” is an impressive 5.3 miles.
– Aspen Mountain (Ajax): Rising directly from downtown Aspen, this mountain features 675 acres of exclusively intermediate and expert terrain. There are no green runs here – it’s a pure skier’s mountain.
– Aspen Highlands: A local’s favorite, famous for the challenging Highland Bowl, which requires a hike to access some of North America’s most thrilling in-bounds terrain.
– Buttermilk: Home of the Winter X Games, Buttermilk is known for its world-class terrain parks and is also a fantastic mountain for beginners and families to build their confidence.

Aspen Snowmass Resort Guide & FAQ

The prime ski season typically runs from mid-December through late March when snow conditions are most reliable. January and February often see the best powder days. For fewer crowds and potential deals, consider visiting in early December or April.

The season generally starts around Thanksgiving (late November) and ends in mid-to-late April. However, these dates are always dependent on snow conditions. Please check the official Aspen Snowmass website for the current season’s exact opening and closing dates.

Four Mountain Sports is the official rental shop of Aspen Snowmass, with locations at the base of each of the four mountains. Renting with them allows you to store your gear overnight for free and easily swap out equipment at any location. Several other independent rental shops are also available in Aspen and Snowmass Village.

Aspen Snowmass operates a fantastic, free bus and shuttle system that connects all four mountains and the towns of Aspen and Snowmass. The buses run frequently throughout the day, making it easy to ski a different mountain each day without needing a car.

We highly recommend booking your transportation to Snowmass as soon as your flights and accommodation are confirmed, especially during peak periods like holidays (Christmas, New Year’s, Presidents’ Day) and the month of March. This ensures vehicle availability and gives you the best choice of private or shared shuttle options.

We often have special pricing available for larger groups or for travel during off-peak times. Please contact us directly with your travel dates, group size, and flight details, and our booking team will provide you with a custom, affordable quote for your transfer to Snowmass.
