History

Before it was a world-class ski destination, Alta was a bustling silver mining town in the late 1800s. After the mining boom faded, the town found a new purpose. With the help of the Salt Lake City Winter Sports Association, the first chairlift at Alta – the Collins Lift – was fashioned from a surplus mining ore tramway and began operating in 1939. This marked the birth of one of America’s most cherished ski areas, which has since maintained its focus on authentic ski experiences over large-scale commercial development.

Overview

Alta is a skier’s mountain, plain and simple. Snowboarders are not permitted, a policy that preserves the snow and creates a distinct on-mountain vibe. The resort boasts 2,614 skiable acres, with a base elevation of 8,530 feet and a top elevation of 11,068 feet. The terrain is legendary, primarily known for its steep, deep, and challenging runs that hold the light, dry “champagne powder” Utah is famous for. The resort receives an average of 545 inches of snow annually, making it one of the snowiest places on Earth.

Skiing Activities
With 7 chairlifts and a variety of surface tows, Alta’s lift infrastructure provides access to terrain for every ability level, though it truly shines for intermediate to expert skiers. From the groomed cruisers off the Sunnyside lift to the iconic powder bowls of the High Traverse, there’s a lifetime of lines to discover. Areas like Alf’s High Rustler are bucket-list descents for experts worldwide. The ski school is highly regarded, offering clinics and lessons focused on mastering Alta’s unique conditions.

Non-Skiing Activities
While skiing is the main event, visitors can also enjoy the serene winter landscape through other activities. The Alta Lodge and other local providers offer guided snowshoe tours and cross-country skiing at the Alta Ski Touring Center, which features groomed tracks for both classic and skate skiing. The peaceful quiet of a walk through the aspens and pines offers a perfect contrast to the high-energy thrill of downhill skiing.

Après-Ski & Restaurants
Alta’s après-ski scene is as classic as its skiing. The Peruvian Bar, affectionately known as the “P-Dog” at the Alta Peruvian Lodge, is an iconic spot for reliving the day’s adventures with a drink and free popcorn. The Goldminer’s Daughter Saloon offers a laid-back atmosphere right at the base of the Collins lift. For on-mountain fine dining, the Collins Grill provides stunning views and a sophisticated menu. Whether you’re looking for a casual beer or a gourmet meal, Alta’s dining options deliver with authentic mountain charm.

Alta Resort Guide & FAQ
When is the best time of year to visit Alta?
For the deepest powder and most reliable conditions, January through early March is considered prime season. For fewer crowds and more sunshine, consider a trip in late March or early April, when the resort often still has an excellent snow base.
What are the typical ski season dates?
Alta’s ski season typically runs from late November through late April. However, these dates are always subject to change based on snowfall and conditions. Always check the official Alta website for the most current information before planning your trip.
Are there equipment rentals available at the resort?
Yes, there are several excellent rental shops at the resort base, including the Alta Ski Shop, located at both the Wildcat and Albion base areas. They offer a full range of high-performance skis and boots suited for Alta’s conditions.
What should I know about lift passes?
Alta offers its own season passes and daily lift tickets, which can be purchased online in advance. The resort is also a partner on the Ikon Pass, which provides a set number of days of access depending on your pass type. For pricing and to purchase, visit Alta’s official website.
What are the road conditions like getting to Alta?
The access road, Highway 210, is a steep mountain canyon road. During winter, it frequently requires vehicles to have 4-wheel drive or snow tires. The road can also close temporarily for avalanche control work. Booking a transportation service to Alta with Rocks2Rocks eliminates this stress, as our vehicles are properly equipped and our drivers are experts in mountain conditions.
How far in advance should I book my Rocks2Rocks transfer?
We recommend booking your transport to Alta as soon as you have your flight and lodging details confirmed. This is especially important during peak periods like holidays (Christmas, New Year’s, and President’s Day week) to ensure availability.
Do you offer discounts for midweek or group bookings?
Our pricing is competitive and reflects our high-quality, reliable service. For large groups or custom itineraries, please contact our booking team directly, and we will be happy to provide a custom quote for your hassle-free experience.
